Shownotes: Putting God First
The Wesleyan Covenant demonstrates putting God first.
Putting God first means putting God above every aspect of our lives—ourselves, positions, possessions, accolades, people . . . and the list goes on.
No place for arrogance. Only humility. 1 Corinthians 4:7b
Key questions:
- Am I were God wants me to be?
- Am I doing what God wants me to do?
- Am I faithful with what God has given me?
Jesus put God first. Our brothers and sisters who are being martyred put God first as did many saints throughout the ages. Putting God first can lead to death. Yet it is fulfilling and nourishing. John 4:31–34, John 17:4
You need a God who is not in your box to put God first.
Putting God first is a conscious love choice. It is one of volition and not airy fairy emotion. It is unchangeable.
Galatians 2:19b–20
It is a work God does.
It’s impact is profound. When we put God first, things and people line up in our lives. We know what to do and when to do it. We know what to expect in life. Moreover, we live with an unshakeable confidence and peace and joy that will not break, even in the face of death.
Practical tip:
Put down something you value the most and write next to that what putting God first looks like in relation to that thing. Ask God for help to do so.
